I have High-Speed... not sure I could ever go back to dial up. I feel there are two things that should be available to everyone everywhere 1) high speed internet and 2) cell service.

I have dial up . I just can't justify the expense of highspeed right now with hubby laid off and no crops right now. I agree the internet just isn't dial up friendly. I have asked Cornell to think about us when they send messages heavy with pictures but they don't seem to understand. One of the reasons I haven't been to this site lately is it takes too long to load. I can't waste the time waiting anymore.
I miss everyone though

Its also hard to justify the cost of high speed in good times. Don't have much choice out my way, Verizon wireless for $69 with 2yr contract or HughesNet (satelite)$59 - $79 depending on package speed.
I have been with my dial-up over 7 years and have kept me at my original sign up monthly fee of $6.95 which includes their version of turbo which helps . Also, my old desk top computer finally retired itself so I replaced it with a laptop so I can visit Wi-Fi free hotspots, Malls, Library, even McDonalds for those massive updates from microsoft.

Linda, what are you using for a browser, Internet Explorer or Firefox? I know that when I was on dial-up, I used to use Firefox and then install a couple of little plug-ins that can optimize graphics to shorten load times, as well as blocking ads and larger graphics altogether. As much as I hate to suggest blocking ads here, it's definitely a reality of working on dial-up and I'd hate to have no not able to visit as often!

I hae high speed, but then, I'm in town and got a great deal through Verizon.
I'd suggest looking at different local ISPs. Many are willing to connect you for less, particularly if you're rural and are willing to have some of their equipment on your property to extend their service capabilities.
BinghamtonWireless.com is a good local for Broome County, NY.
It might be spotty sometimes - working with a local - but it's an option that isn't dial up.
I love Bob's advice - I didn't know there was such a speed difference with browsers. Very cool!
