Default Grower Tops New Jersey NCGA Corn Yield Contest

Grower Tops New Jersey NCGA Corn Yield Contest with Hubner Seeds Hybrid
Stewartsville's Jeffrey Barlieb Registers 261 Bushels Per Acre

A Stewartsville, N.J., grower credits solid seed genetics and good seed selection advice in winning top state honors in the 2009 National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) Corn Yield Contest. Jeffrey Barlieb placed first with 261.3389 bushels per acre in the New Jersey no-till/strip-till, non-irrigated category with Hubner Seeds' H5582VT3 brand.

Barlieb raises corn and soybeans and operates a 100-head dairy with his father-in-law, Sam Santini. Santini says they planted the brand on the advice of Jeff's father, Kenny, who is also a Hubner Seed brand district sales manager familiar with the company's seed and the area's agronomics.

"I have worked with Hubner Seeds for several years. I know that they want to be a farmer’s most profitable relationship, and I knew the H5582VT3 brand would be a good fit for their farm," says Kenny Barlieb about the recommendation. "The brand can really maximize yield potential and is a reliable go-to solution. It has outstanding agronomic characteristics and stress tolerance with very strong potential yield consistency."

Santini was impressed with the 112-day brand's performance during the cool, wet 2009 growing season. "We didn't do anything special for the yield contest. Our corn was planted a little earlier than usual, and it came up looking great. We did not have too much disease pressure in the field, either. With what little gray leaf spot we had, the corn held up well," he says. "Our corn yields generally average in the low 200s, so this was an excellent brand for us."

Barlieb says H5582VT3 brand is known for its plant health and stalk and root quality, which promotes very good late-season plant integrity and standability. The brand is highly adaptable across both light and darker soils, handles soil variations well and withstands seasonal stresses.

"We have been raising Hubner corn and soybeans for about five years now. We are 100 percent Hubner soybeans and about 70 percent Hubner corn, including corn for silage," says Santini. "Some farmers are hesitant to leave the bigger seed companies and try regional seed brands. I was, too. But I would encourage other farmers to try Hubner. You not only get the seed that your dealer knows will fit with your farm, you get great support as well."

Hubner Seed provides high-quality, high-performance seed for corn, soybean, wheat and alfalfa farmers located east of the Mississippi River. Through local knowledge and personalized seed solutions, Hubner Seed strives to maximize farm potential and become the farmer’s most profitable relationship. Learn more at www.hubnerseed.com.
