Question So, what would you like to know more about in organics?

In the coming year, what organic topics would you like to read and learn more about in the pages of Farming?

Sugaring? Dairy? Fruits and vegetables? Regulations and certification guidelines? Just let me know here!

Default Bruce Porter Owner

Hi Bob,
I would like to know the best and quickest way to compost my hayl and manure that has built up this winter. I have 20 cows that I let out daily and they feed on baleage. Needless to say I'm getting quite a build up of hay etc.
Any help would be welcomed.
Thanks
Bruce

Any notes or tips on organic gardening.
I have grapes starting. Any pests to watch out for?
I am trying broccoli this year, and would like to know how to prevent aphids.
I am also going to try potatoes this year. My grandparents use to "dust" them before storage. They have passed on, so I don't know, so what does that do? Is that an organic?
Have had limas and tomatoes with good luck.

Apple trees were hurt last year by japanese beetles. Are those trap bags the best way to control them. I've been told to spray the trees with sevin, but don't want to use chemicals.

ANy help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Default certifying organic?

My wife and I have inherited her grandparents farm in NW MI...we would like to someday certify it organic: vegetables, sheep, chickens...this land has not been farmed in 50+ years. It has been in the family the entire time, and no one farms anywhere near us. We know we don't have to worry about overspray on our land from neighboring farms and their fertilizer. I guess we would like some pointers on getting the ball rolling to get certified... I think this would be a great topic and their are possibly many other topics that can branch off of this.

Thanks, Josh and Areta

Great ideas, thanks! We're looking to add a monthly column that focuses on organic issues, and I'll gladly share these ideas. Certification is a HUGE issue that we'll definitely cover. As for individual crops/pests within an organic structure, that's perfect.

Thanks again and keep 'em coming!

Bob

Question What is Organic

I see a lot of items in the grocery stores around Kilmarnock that are labled Organic. What and how is it determined what is and is not organic?

I have a small garden (comunity garden that is shared by 4 other people. I am new to this Garden and they have been trying to go organic for the last 3 years. I think it is great and will do my part to insure that what I do in the garden is concidered organic.

Does anyone know the ratio of material (brown/Green/soil) to mix in a compost bin) some here have said 1/3 of each ? is this correct?

Thank you and have a blessed day

Ok , I think I have finally found the place to pose my question. I would like to build a certified organic greenhouse this fall in order to grow all the transplants for my Market Garden and also a few extras to sell to defray my costs. Most of my sales will be heirloom tomatoes . Where can I find information about building said greenhouse? I contacted NOFA and they were no help at all. Thay want to charge me $30 for the information which I feel should be free somewhere. Anyone have a link?

I agree Linda. That would be great information to have. I need to start thinking about a greenhouse as well.

I think some articles on organic insecticides and organic fungicides would be great. I am using Spinosad for the first time this year and it is working well for me. I found it by accident looking through a High Mowing Catalog. Talking to several Certified Organic people and they never heard of it. It actually kills Colorado Potato Beetles!!!!!flea beetles, Japanese Beetles as well as cabbage loopers and other worms. My cabbage is beautiful and so is my broccoli. I tried it on cucumber beetles in my pumpkins and they disappeared too. Its not listed for cucumber beetles. More info please
Linda
